It’s your boy Sona! (@sonaman)

Continuing our ‘On the Rise’ theme, where we take a look at up and coming, young talented musicians… next up is hotly anticipated UK based Nigerian artist SONA.

The UK music scene has gone through many changes over the years. From Garage to Grime and now Afrobeats. In the past, we opened our musical borders to the U.S but increasingly the trend suggests homegrown talent is becoming more appreciated. We have embraced the rhythmic and danceable sounds of Afrobeats. The best thing about afrobeats is that it does not limit itself to just Africans. Its catchy hooks and infectious grooves appeal to everyone. Consequently, it has found its way into our clubs and airwaves with songs like ‘Dangerous Love’ being blasted on the radio. So who’s hot now? The majority of artists on the afrobeats scene, such as Ice Prince, Burna Boy, Davido and Wiz Kid are based in Africa. However, the UK now has a few heavyweights of its own. We’re talking Mista Silva, Fuse and now Sona.

Newcomer Sona: UK bad-boy to watch out for

Earlier on this year, Sona released his track No Wahala where it all began. Since then, Sona has made appearances nationwide and in the process even supported the Black Diamond himself, Wande Coal.

Following the success of No Wahala, he went on to release Ijo Sona. Now this song was totally different but in a good way. Clearly not set to be restricted to the club scene alone, this was a song that the whole family could enjoy. In the music video that followed shortly after, set in an African style party, people of all ages vibe to the sounds of Sonaman.

“Fresh from the success of his last two singles “No Wahala” and “Ijo Sona” which have been streamed online over half a million times in only a few months and received rave reviews from leading African tastemakers, fast-rising British Nigerian Pop artist and musician SONA is proud to debut the exquisite and cinematic new music video for his excellent new single “Omode Yi”” Source – AoA Management

Having followed Sona’s rise, we are impressed with his edgy yet elaborate work. Although described as an afrobeat artist, placing him in one box would be a disservice to his talent. A natural performer, the stage is where his best work comes to life. It is fair to say that Sona has a great future ahead of him. The ladies love him, whilst the guys appreciate his talent; a rare mix. With the world at his feet, we hope he fulfils his potential!! Be sure sure to follow his journey, we certainly will be…
